Yes, that’s right, “Starvations” with an “ess”. Was walking in one of the local malls here in Himeji and came across this absurd and probably offensively named children’s clothing store. From what I briefly saw of it, it looks like it’s mostly gear for tots. Presumably (for here) well fed tots, thankfully.
I know that I am hardly conventional when it comes to naming my own companies. I mean Hell Guitars is hardly mainstream and it does seem to bother a few of God’s creatures. So I decided to appease the worship market and change tack from the (apparently) theological and named my accessory company “Guitarshit”. Which, on reflection, is not exactly main street either but at least it’s not synonymous with misery. But Starvations?!
Yes, it is true that 99.5% of Japanese have no idea what it means however I am fairly certain that whoever came up with it knew full well the meaning. And labeling a children’s clothing store such just reeks of poor taste. UNLESS…it is actually social commentary designed to shame and correct. Yes! This is the only explanation that makes any sense to me. Malls are temples of conspicuous consumption (for the masses anyway). By naming a mall kids clothing store “Starvations” we are meant to feel the folly of our ways and be reminded that our money could be better spent by helping others. Of course!
Hmm… One hitch… As 99.5% of Japanese have no idea what this means, pretty much the only people who would “get it” would be the foreigners. Which is pretty much me and this dyed-blond American guy I see riding his bike now and then. Still they make a good point even if they didn’t mean to. No time like the present to help others!

Oh my))) What a strange sense of humor has a person, who made this of sign )
And something told me that there is some loss of sense of proportion )))
Looks like more fodder for Engrish.com.
